Bill Cunningham

I just finished watching this little gem. I'm not sure how many people saw it back in 2010, but I have to say it was fascinating. Bill Cunningham is the street style expert for the New York Times and he's become a fixture in the international fashion scene as well. Here is a man so completely overcome with a passion for clothes that he doesn't have romantic relationships or drive a car. He just can't bear to miss the shot. He refuses to eat in the fancy restaurants many of his subjects frequent, and he dons a uniform of a french street cleaner smock with comfortable black sneakers. His bicycle weaves through the sea of cabs and the man spends all day on the street- rain or shine. As Utilitarian as his own wardrobe is, Cunningham favors ornate and unusual ensembles for his photographs. Among his subjects are the legendary and personal favorite of mine, Iris Apfel. He is egalitarian and unaffected, as he mixes equally well with the homeless population and the upper echelon of New York society. The level of obsession partnered with his personal philosophy is a rarity and mesmerizing to watch. He's bossy, opinionated and humble. Not to mention, the guy is in his mid 80s and still chasing after models with the same urgency of a war photographer. Must see.
