A Gypsy Caravan</div>
<br />
In my blog travels, I came across a link to a wonderful little article over on <a href="http://thoughtcatalog.com/2013/25-things-you-dont-have-to-justify-to-anyone/">thought catalog</a>. Chelsea Fagan gets it just right with a list of things that people in our mid twenties are constantly justifying. The fact that we have a job, or don't; are in a relationship or aren't; what we do with our free time; how much money we make/spend. How refreshing to read in a public domain all of the things that we worry about are none of anyone's beeswax. We're doing just fine.<br />
<br />
I've long struggled with the question of whether to do the "responsible" thing, or what I really want. In reality, I took the job that I was offered instead of holding out for something I wanted, I signed a lease for an apartment that I could barely afford, I buy vegetables instead of chips at the grocery store. And the truth is, I'm not happy. It's not what I wanted. Perhaps I'd soon come to the same conclusion if I lived the life of a bohemian wanderer, but maybe it's worth a shot? I hardly think that the fear of living without health insurance keeps them from living the way they want. If I could find myself a fabulous gypsy caravan, I just might have to make the leap...Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-64937389669486091122013-02-04T06:22:00.000-08:002013-02-04T06:23:24.844-08:00Paperman<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I know there are quite a few people out there who are not the biggest fans of Valentine's Day. Out of respect for the majority, I will not dwell on the fact that the holiday is a mere 10 days away. Personally, I find it the best excuse to wear pink and red together, and make the construction paper crafts that you've never quite been able to justify the rest of the year. Disney's new (oscar nominated) short film, Paperman is the perfect compromise. It's magical and sweet, but feels grown up, and dare I say it--artsy? Bravo Disney, Bravo.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-36742955445786839412013-01-15T07:33:00.001-08:002013-01-15T07:39:33.714-08:00LA LivingAs the boy and I plan our move to the west coast, I find myself looking at interior inspiration with a lighter feel. I've long been a fan of <a href="http://www.freundevonfreunden.com/interviews/claire-cottrell/">Freunde von Freunden</a> for their unstyled and fresh photos of artists in their natural habitats, and one of their most recent spreads really hits the spot. Claire Cottrell's Mt. Washington home is just what the doctor ordered--a return to simple pleasures and bridging the gap between indoors and outdoors. (I could just as easily envy her career as a landscape architect or the fact that she now runs an online art book store).<br />
<br />
As an East Coaster, I've spent my time making my home a refuge from the frigid 8 months of winter and stifling summers. It's usually layered with patterns and my eye has been trained to go to plaids and rich colors whenever possible. The new year has me craving something different. Claire's house manages to look finished and lived in even though she's only been there a few months. It's as though she'd rather spend her time arranging flowers than shopping for a bookcase. No matter. The floor is the largest shelf, after all! These photos are the interior design equivalent to a spa day. Don't they make you just want to run around your garden, tending to your pesticide-free tomatoes in your favorite yellow dress?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the inspirational video of the day. Is it a right of passage that the first job out of school is difficult and feels like a step backwards? Maybe the fact that we are working at all is what's important. My dad has always said that work is a four letter word for a reason. All of a sudden you graduate, and there is a world that hands you a laundry list of responsibilities and bills. Why do I feel like I started out behind? Perhaps, or most likely, I'm the spoiled liberal arts graduate with too much time to lean on her philosophy degree and ask herself questions about her greater purpose. Is it really my right to be fulfilled intellectually <i>and</i> able to afford cleaning supplies? Why should I get to have it all? But then again, maybe wasting time is not the same as paying your dues. Starting from the bottom is admirable only when you like the view of the top. So what if just for argument's sake, I take the apartment and grocery shopping for granted? What if money really was no object?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having spent the last few months mulling over this question, I've decided to dedicate my days off to digging up an answer. In the name of New Years Resolutions, I'll bridge the ever-widening gap of "free days" and "work days." What is it that I want to do every day when I get out of bed? How can I challenge myself to improve without the possibility of deferring the final say to a professor or boss? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what I've got so far:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. save more than I spend</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. keep an ongoing list of strengths, weaknesses and tough questions</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. get rid of anything I don't need</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. make rather than buy </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

I seem to be on a roll with fabulous apartment posts so why stop now? <a href="http://www.freundevonfreunden.com/interviews/">freunde von freunden</a> is the latest blog discovery that allows readers to take a peak into artists' homes. In most cases, they are casually thrown together with a European charm. One does not get the sense that the homes have been styled or edited from the way their owners live in them. I happen to love textile designer, Harper Poe's place in Charleston because it feels welcoming, collected and functional. The southern cooking wouldn't be all that bad either.</div>

Additional apartment inspiration came while perusing <a href="http://www.vogue.com/culture/article/shop-the-look-kyle-dewoodys-apt-with-lsd/">vogue.com</a> in the form of Kyle DeWoody's apartment. The founder of Grey Area, the alternative gallery website mixes pattern and zen neutrals in a way that feels funky and young. Admittedly, I'm not cool enough to attempt hanging a squiggly silver version of my last name over my bed. Traditional monograms are still my safety blanket. I do however, love the art casually leaning against the wall that says "I have too many fabulous pieces a too little time to hang them, admire them at your leisure."The space appears effortlessly thrown together but something tells me this woman knows what she's doing.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-8586729996016707062012-06-24T14:37:00.002-07:002012-06-24T14:37:38.940-07:00ba&sh<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Even though I just returned from a little holiday in London and I'm planning an August in Italy, I can't stop thinking about Parisian style. Ba&sh is my latest discovery and they're homepage video has me smitten. The waif-like heroine manages to balance mermaid locks and sleeve tattoos. Gusty. Maybe it's the warm weather but I have the urge to throw on some loose dresses and slouchy boots. Unfortunately, I won't be able to afford any of these little beauties until the exchange rates change in my favor.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-30806529722213048572012-06-11T09:32:00.001-07:002012-06-11T09:32:07.417-07:00Chiang Mai Love<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Always the early bird when it comes to decorating, I have started to plan for my first apartment. Never mind that I don't actually have a place and I won't be moving in until September, I've already decided it will be a good mix of functional basics with a few pops of color in traditional prints. As I will be working long hours in retail, my bed is of the utmost importance. I'm willing to splurge (breaking my rule of no single piece over $100) for my bed frame and mattress. The linens are the ever practical white cotton so I'm in great need of a pop.<br />
<br />
Luckily, I came across <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/AriannaBelle">Arianna Belle's</a> shop on Etsy. Her patterned pillows are just what the doctor ordered. I opted for a custom cover (as I already had the insert) in the Chiang Mai Aquamarine fabric. I must be late to the party because it was the first time I'd seen Shumacher's lovely Chinese pattern. With almost every color, it ties my <a href="http://www.westelm.com/products/swiss-dot-duvet-shams-white-slate-t214/?pkey=cduvet-covers">West Elm Swiss Dot Euro Shams</a> and my <a href="http://www.jonathanadler.com/Capri-Needlepoint-Pillow/?cat=0&initial=">Jonathan Adler Capri Needlepoint Pillow</a> together. I'll be posting pictures as soon as I get moved in.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-27076642618592971382012-06-08T12:10:00.001-07:002012-06-08T12:10:36.508-07:00The Genius of Happy Menocal<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I was first introduced to Happy Menocal's work some years ago while perusing a Jonathan Adler store. Her matador watercolor prints stopped me dead in my tracks but as a struggling young artist myself, the price tag forced me to walk away. It was just something about the colors and the fact that the figures reminded me of Quentin Blake's work (you know his work from Roald Dahl books). Unfortunately, Menocal made only 50 in the matador edition, so though I've heard rumors of few stragglers left in select JA stores, I've made my peace with the fact that I will never actually own one. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Today I found myself on her website and come to realize she has an impressive resume: Vanity Fair, Stubbs and Wooten, Martha Stewart Weddings, and J.crew have all featured her designs. Seems the little lady has been discovered. </span><br />

SO SO excited to see this opening weekend. I only hope that the movie is as good as the trailer. I've been a little MIA from the blog world recently, but I promise it's for a good reason. I've been finishing up my lifetime of schooling and figuring out what comes next. Having sold most of my wardrobe earlier this year, packing will be the least of my worries. But the real question is where will my tiny suitcase and I end up? I turned to "The Graduate" for answers. I was pleased to discover that kids of the 60s were just as confused as we are now. If I don't start up a destructive affair with any of my friends parents soon, I think I'll be just fine (how appropriate that I'm writing this on Mother's Day). But I digress. Take what wisdom you will from the movie, but I'm taking Katharine Ross's wardrobe, hair and makeup. The woman is a stunner with her false eyelashes and earnestness. She also rocks a widow's peak like nobody's business. I plan to channel her to my Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack while I finish up my pesky exams.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-87755938812078448652012-04-23T05:46:00.000-07:002012-04-23T05:46:27.154-07:00Giovanna Battiglia<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The time has finally come to pay tribute to Giovanna Battiglia. A sartorial inspiration for quite some time, the Italian-born former model and current editor of W magazine is equal parts effortless and adventurous with her choices. She could wear anything but favors classic silhouettes with modern details. In her own words "too much is never enough." And don't even get me started on those Valentino studded heels. Whoever said kitten heels weren't sexy hasn't met these babies.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-91891712663403423382012-04-19T14:12:00.001-07:002012-04-19T14:14:34.764-07:00The Jean Jacket<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZfRsjk9ChKk/T5B9eF7QxRI/AAAAAAAAAH4/ZZO6_8MVFi8/s1600/miranda_kerr_1-thumb-440x605-30807.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZfRsjk9ChKk/T5B9eF7QxRI/AAAAAAAAAH4/ZZO6_8MVFi8/s640/miranda_kerr_1-thumb-440x605-30807.jpg" width="464" /></a></div><br />

The jean jacket first made an appearance in my wardrobe back in middle school. I opted for a roomy 80s fit in a medium wash from j.crew (note this was when the brand was an ll bean competitor, before the lyons redesign).<br />
<br />
Recently, I noticed my sister getting more use out of jacket then I was, so I decided to pass the torch. I gleefully hopped aboard the chambray shirt bandwagon but something was still missing. So I turned to Levi's for the classic dark wash, fitted and feminine take on the jacket. It arrived today and even has inner pockets for protecting valuables! Who needs a purse? I've reasoned that it works equally well with my black shift dress and white jeans.<br />
<br />
In the fall I plan to layer it up with my peacoat and cashmere. This is a comeback I can get behind.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-5552108979527597452012-04-18T06:14:00.000-07:002012-04-18T06:14:55.212-07:00The Civil Wars<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='640' height='370' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/tyy1XgTgW-I?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

The house that designer Sid Bergamin shares with his partner, Maurilo Lomas is the perfect collage of pattern and color. Hooray for summer blockbuster alternatives.</div>Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-41867456089587379002012-04-05T04:37:00.001-07:002012-04-05T04:40:47.075-07:00Pajama Dressing<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xPC80fKu-kk/T32BLEHCINI/AAAAAAAAAFg/IhAra24vkrk/s1600/img-gwyneth-living-in-season_182446883451.jpg_article_gallery_slideshow_v2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xPC80fKu-kk/T32BLEHCINI/AAAAAAAAAFg/IhAra24vkrk/s1600/img-gwyneth-living-in-season_182446883451.jpg_article_gallery_slideshow_v2.jpg" /></a></div><br />

</div>I was doing a bit of spring cleaning yesterday, and I came across some photos of one of Gwyneth Paltrow's Vogue spreads. I believe it was last year? The spread feels relaxed and unstyled. The operative word being <i>feels</i>. Either way, I have decided to use it as inspiration for pajama dressing for spring. I loathe that people are willing to walk around in public (airplanes and theaters are the worst) in their bed clothes, but this may be the perfect compromise. I will never condone slippers out of the house, but a men's PJ shirt with vintage piping? Yes please. And because it's on trend, there just so happen to be some wonderful, and affordable options from <a href="http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=53982&scid=914365012&pid=914365&vid=1">piperlime</a> and <a href="http://us.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=33060&storeId=13052&productId=4979491&langId=-1&cmpId=usls_prod&_$ja=tsid:21416&viewAllFlag=false&sort_field=Relevance&beginIndex=1&pageSize=20&categoryId=208637&parent_categoryId=208580&refinements=category~[209855%7C208637]&noOfRefinements=1&%7Cprd:QFGLnEolOWg&siteID=QFGLnEolOWg-_vSH18EacU7Lje8s9tnPZQ">topshop</a>. I have long considered white canvas sneakers a necessary item for spring and summer. The classic Keds and converse low tops have been the go to, but something new has come on my radar. Of course, made nearly 100 years ago in Italy, <a href="http://www.superga-usa.com/">Superga</a> is hardly a revelation. The boyfriend has worn his so often they are almost unrecognizable in color with more holes than canvas. When I visited him a few weeks ago, we made a special trip to the store in Rome. Though the classic comes in a dozen shades, he went with the tried and true white. Men never change. But there is something about the simple little shoe that works with jeans or a dress. They are after all, the "people's shoes of Italy".<br />
<br />
I borrowed them for our day visit to the beaches of Positano. A girl needs some time to get used to walking barefoot on a beach of stones. Poor tootsies. It made me miss the sand of the East Coast just a bit. Turns out, my impractical red dress (I insist on style over function for Italian day trips), and his sneakers make a good team. I may just have to get a pair in my own size to keep all of my summer dresses company.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-46591037146001803702012-04-03T17:54:00.000-07:002012-04-03T17:54:30.530-07:00Tomboy Style<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pFkyp4q3mDw/T3uaUv-FtRI/AAAAAAAAAEg/QtzPdb4J5rE/s1600/jean+seberg06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pFkyp4q3mDw/T3uaUv-FtRI/AAAAAAAAAEg/QtzPdb4J5rE/s640/jean+seberg06.jpg" width="478" /></a></div><br />

Catching up with the latest <a href="http://matchbookmag.com/">Matchbook Mag</a>, I stumbled upon a wonderful Q&A with Lizzie Garrett Mettler, the creator of the blog, TomboyStyle. Where have you been all my life? Lizzie is the link between tomboy and fashion; form and function. Lucky for us all, she's even collected her tomboy icons into a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tomboy-Style-Beyond-Boundaries-Fashion/dp/0847838420/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325704763&sr=8-1">book</a>. My copy is in the mail.<br />

Admittedly, I have always poured over fashion magazines, but recently I'm moving into the Utilitarian stage with my wardrobe. Maybe it's because I have too many adventures planned to be weighed down with anything that can't serve two functions. It's about well made clothing that at least at one time, looked presentable, even if you've since worn it into the ground. In fact, all the better. Clothes are meant to be worn and appreciated for both look and feel. I'm all about borrowing from the boys and doing it better.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-44571772977597734042012-03-30T15:30:00.003-07:002012-04-03T18:21:46.035-07:00Bill Cunningham<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/NYqiLJBXbss?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
I just finished watching this little gem. I'm not sure how many people saw it back in 2010, but I have to say it was fascinating. Bill Cunningham is the street style expert for the New York Times and he's become a fixture in the international fashion scene as well. Here is a man so completely overcome with a passion for clothes that he doesn't have romantic relationships or drive a car. He just can't bear to miss the shot. He refuses to eat in the fancy restaurants many of his subjects frequent, and he dons a uniform of a french street cleaner smock with comfortable black sneakers. His bicycle weaves through the sea of cabs and the man spends all day on the street- rain or shine. As Utilitarian as his own wardrobe is, Cunningham favors ornate and unusual ensembles for his photographs. Among his subjects are the legendary and personal favorite of mine, Iris Apfel. He is egalitarian and unaffected, as he mixes equally well with the homeless population and the upper echelon of New York society. The level of obsession partnered with his personal philosophy is a rarity and mesmerizing to watch. He's bossy, opinionated and humble. Not to mention, the guy is in his mid 80s and still chasing after models with the same urgency of a war photographer. Must see.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-6878032691594608392012-03-28T08:05:00.002-07:002012-03-28T08:14:19.641-07:00Olé!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jl4aYwvKX4w/T3MmM1PR2iI/AAAAAAAAAD4/EDrIr4B-SXM/s1600/tumblr_m18p6ub59J1qd3bpyo1_500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jl4aYwvKX4w/T3MmM1PR2iI/AAAAAAAAAD4/EDrIr4B-SXM/s640/tumblr_m18p6ub59J1qd3bpyo1_500.jpg" width="460" /></a></div><br />

Either way, there are great options on Etsy and in vintage stores so I'm keeping my eyes peeled. <span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">There are few things better than jetting off to Italy for a week to visit a special someone, especially when the agenda mixes fashion blogging with the delicious pasta dinners and cobblestone strolls. My afternoon was spent catching up on the latest issue of Vogue and some "dolce fare niente." I happened upon an interesting profile of Caroline Issa, a Canadien born fashion director of Tank magazine and editor of <a href="http://becauselondon.com/">Because London</a>. Here is a woman who has it all- exotic beauty, impeccable tailoring and a Wharton business degree. Swoon. Feminine suits, sleek updos and bright lips put the modern spin on her Katherine Hepburn air. It also seems she's really kept perspective while working in the fashion industry, an increasingly rare talent. </span>Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605373403144376095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3279259289009365131.post-52737264247701869442012-03-16T08:57:00.005-07:002012-03-27T08:56:40.589-07:00Chic Muse<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0qVNfOX8-fs/T2NiG0eXNvI/AAAAAAAAADQ/IIxIwHryhA0/s1600/CostumeNational31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0qVNfOX8-fs/T2NiG0eXNvI/AAAAAAAAADQ/IIxIwHryhA0/s640/CostumeNational31.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
